Rogaine vs. Hims: Best Solution for Hair Loss Treatment

You probably have heard of Rogaine numerous times if you ever looked into hair loss treatment products. They have been on business for several years. Hims, on the other hand, is a relatively new startup that provides several different products, including some for hair loss.

Let’s compare Rogaine vs. Hims. What are their similarities and differences? Which one has a better or more effective product for hair loss treatment? Is Rogaine right for you or Hims? Let’s find out.

Losing Hair Is Normal, It Will Happen to All of Us

Some people start losing hair as early as 15 or 16 years old, and others may have beautiful and thick hair until they are in their 40s or 50s. But there is one general rule: we all are going to lose hair sooner or later in life. According to several studies, 66% percent of men lose hair before they turn 35. Yes, you heard it right! By the time you are 35, chances are you already lost some hair, or you are about to start losing hair. Even though hair loss is prevalent among men, it is very uncommon to hear a guy is talking about hair loss or asking his doctor, male friends, or family for a solution to prevent it.

What is the main cause of hair loss?

Dihydrotestosterone or DHT is the most common cause of thinning hair or balding in men. DHT is the by-product of Testosterone, which is a very common hormone in our body. Basically, this hormone in our body is kind of responsible for our hair loss. Unfortunately, as of now, scientists have not been able to find a cure for hair loss that is caused by our own hormone.  Male pattern boldness is another name for the hair loss that happens naturally because of our own hormones.

Male pattern baldness does not have any cure, but Pharmaceutical companies have discovered several treatments that can prevent hair loss from becoming worse or completely stop it. These hair loss treatments are found to be effective for most men. Rogaine and Hims both offer treatments to prevent hair loss due to male pattern baldness.

Two clinically tested products can help men with natural hair loss. One is called Finasteride, which is a tablet that needs to be taken daily by mouth, and the other one is Minoxidil, which is a topical solution. Depending on your conditions and what you are seeking to prevent, you may need to use one or both of them.

Should You Use Minoxidil?

If you just started losing hair, then you are in the right place. The product that Rogaine and Hims offer is definitely going to be useful for you. This product does not regrow the hair you already lost several years ago, but instead, it keeps the hair you have and prevents it from falling. If you ever see several hair strands on the pillow or in the shower, it is time for you to start taking Minoxidil before it gets too late.

Hims products are designed for men. They have another brand called hers, which is dedicated to women’s products. Similar to Hims, Rogaine also has most of his products for men, but it also has a product for women who are dealing with hair loss as well.  You can purchase the female version of Rogaine here on Amazon.

If you are planning to purchase this hair loss treatment from either Rogaine or Hims, there are few things you need to consider.

  • This product does not cure your hair loss
  • This product only prevents your hair loss from becoming worse
  • You need to be patient as it takes several months to see the initial results
  • You need to be disciplined and very consistent as you should use this medication daily. This means you need to set aside a few minutes every day to take care of your hair
  • If you stop taking this medicine, your hair loss starts back again. So, you may need to take this for as long as you want to see hair on your head.
  • This product is shown to be very effective on most men, so by applying it for a couple of months, chances are you would see less hair loss.

Which One is Right for you, Hims or Rogaine?

Hims and Rogaine have some similarities and differences. Their main similarity is that they both offer a topical product for hair loss treatment called Minoxidil. We will dive deeper into this.

The difference between Hims and Rogaine is the number of products they offer. Rogaine only offers Minoxidil for hair loss treatment, whereas Hims offers few other products along with Minoxidil to help you with your hair loss.

As far as Rogaine Minoxidil, you can either purchase it from their website or Amazon. Hims offers  Minoxidil and also Finasteride as a complete kit for hair loss treatment. Depending on what type of treatment you are seeking, you may only need Minoxidil (which you can also get from Rogaine), or you may need to use both Minoxidil and Finasteride (which you can get it from Hims).

As far as Minoxidil itself, both companies offer a similar product with an identical active ingredient, one is branded, and the other one is generic. Here is a little side note about the difference between the branded and generic form of a product:

Generic drugs have the same active ingredient as branded products. They have the same quality, same dosage, strength, and same route of administration (how you take them). Branded products are usually more expensive, and that is because their manufacturers have to go through extensive research, development, and clinical trials (typically take several years and are very costly) to get the FDA approval. Veras for generic products, their manufacturers, only need to prove that active ingredient is identical with the branded product to get the FDA approval. So generic products are less costly, and that is why they are cheaper.

What Is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is the active ingredient of Rogaine®. Rogaine has been on the market for a couple of decades, and a lot of men have used it. Minoxidil will increase the size of follicles and extends the natural hair growth cycles.

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) published a study showing that daily usage of 5% minoxidil topical solution increased hair regrowth and decreased hair shedding.

Both Rogaine and Hims offer 5% Minoxidil. The main difference is that the Minoxidil from Rogaine comes in solution and foam, but the Minoxidil from Hims comes only in solution form. If you are interested in foam, then you can easily purchase it from Amazon.

When you start using Minoxidil, initial shedding may happen as the new hair is trying to push out older strands. Hair growth will show as little as 3-4 months.

It is really interesting to know how Minoxidil was discovered for hair loss treatment. Originally, Minoxidil was intended to treat high blood pressure. During the trial period, some patients observed hair growth in some unwanted areas of their bodies, such as their cheek or back of their hands. With this finding, scientists decided to use Minoxidil as a topical solution for hair loss treatment.

Until today, we still don’t know the Minoxidil exact mechanism of action. All we know is that Minoxidil is a vasodilator- meaning that it increases the size of blood vessels- which helps with more oxygen and nutrients in our blood. More blood flow in vessel helps the follicles to increase in size and prevents hair from falling.

Is Minoxidil Effective for Receding Hairline?

Whether or not Minoxidil works for receding hairline is a debate that you can read about all over the internet.

Here are some facts about Minoxidil and receding hairline. In the original study of Minoxidil as a topical solution for hair loss treatment, it was only evaluated on the top of the scalp and crown. Since that study led to FDA approval of this product, it became the case for people to believe that Minoxidil is only effective on those areas. Despite this belief, there is lots of evidence that Minoxidil is effective on the entire scalp, including the hairline.

Minoxidil dilates blood vessels and increases the blood flow wherever it is applied. So, when you use the Minoxidil on your scalp, it interacts with scalp sulfotransferase and becomes Minoxidil sulfate, which is the molecule that helps with your hair loss. Since Minoxidil works by increasing the blood flow on the area that is applied, there is no reason Minoxidil should not work for receding hairline.

So as long as you apply Minoxidil on the hairline, it would have the same exact effect as scalp. In 2014, the effect of 5% Minoxidil -as a topical foam- was tested on 16 men. This study was done on parts of the scalp, excluding vertex. The results showed that Minoxidil is as effective on the frontal scalp as it is on vertex.

Rogaine vs. Hims Minoxidil

Both Hims and Rogaine offer 5% Minoxidil. Rogaine offers both foam and solution, and Hims only provides solution form. Rogaine has been on the market for decades, whereas Hims, that is a new startup. Rogaine offers only Minoxidil, but Hims offers other products for hair loss as well. Let’s compare their Minoxidil first:

Rogaine Minoxidil

Rogaine products
  • Rogaine is the brand name for Minoxidil
  • Rogaine offers Minoxidil for both men and women
-The Minoxidil for women is only 2% concentrated
  • You can get the Rogaine Minoxidil from their website or Amazon
  • You need to apply it twice daily for Minoxidil to be effective
  • It would take between 2 to 4 months to see the results
  • The way you use it depends on if it is foam or solution

How to use Rogaine Minoxidil?

You need to make sure your hair is completely dry before applying it. Turn the can (if using the foam) upside down and squirt half a cap of the foam on your fingertips. Move your hair to one side so you can see the skin on your scalp. Apply the foam on your scalp and rub it where the balding is happening.

If you are using the solution form, it comes with a dropper; squeeze it to bring in 1 ml (there is a 1 mL line on dropper) of the Minoxidil solution. Then apply it directly to the scalp and rub it. After you are done, you can style your hair as usual.

Do not use more often than directed; continued use is necessary to increase the hair regrowth.

Hims Minoxidil

Hims Minoxidil
  • Hims Minoxidil is generic form of the branded one (Rogaine)
  • Hims Minoxidil is only offered in solution form
  • You can purchase the Minoxidil directly from their website.
  • You need to apply it twice daily
  • It would take between 2 to 4 months to see the results

With Hims, you have the option of visiting a doctor online. After you register on their website, you will answer some medical and lifestyle questions. Based on your answers, the doctor may prescribe you Minoxidil, Finasteride, or the combination of both.

Since Finasteride is a prescribed medication, you cannot get it over the counter, similar to Minoxidil. Another advantage of using Hims is that you can follow up with the doctor is you observe any side effects.

Hims Minoxidil gets shipped to your house for free, so you don’t even have to leave your home for the office visit or prescription pickup.

How to use Hims Minoxidil?

You need to make sure your hair is completely dry before applying it. Hims Minoxidil solution comes with a dropper; squeeze it to bring in 1 ml (there is a 1 mL line on dropper). Drop on the affected area and let it dry for 2-4 hours. Try to keep your hair away from your pillow when wet.

Does Hims or Rogaine Minoxidil Have Any Side Effects?

Have you ever noticed the long list of side effects that come with the medication you take? Pharmaceutical companies are required by law to report the side effects of each drug to costumers.  The good news is that majority of us never experience those side effects.

Similar to other drugs, Minoxidil is not an exception either. The active ingredient of the product that Rogaine and Hims offer is the same, so most probably, you would see similar side effects. Minoxidil may make your head itchy or cause dandruff, which you can prevent and stop it quickly by using an anti-itching and anti-dandruff shampoo like Baebody.

Some other  Minoxidil side effects include but not limited to chest pain, dizziness, skin rash, swelling of the hands and feet, headache, redness, and irritation at the site of application and unusual hair growth on the face, arm, and back.

If you notice any of these side effects, you can talk with your physician or stop applying Minoxidil.  Usually, the side effects will go away as soon as you stop using Minoxidil.

Where to Purchase Minoxidil?

If you only need to use Minoxidil for hair loss treatment, then you are in luck. 5% Minoxidil does not require a prescription, and you can buy it over the counter. There are a few options for you to purchase Minoxidil.

To buy Minoxidil, you can go to your local pharmacy, order it through Amazon, use subscription companies like Hims or purchase it directly from Rogaine. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Rogaine website

If you go to the  Rogaine website, you can purchase branded Minoxidil. Rogaine offers both solution and foam. If you are only interested in foam, then you may want to buy it from Rogaine as Hims only provides the solution.

Rogaine also offers Minoxidil for women as well, so you can kill two birds with one stone if a female member of your family also needs to purchase Minoxidil.

Women should be careful using Minoxidil. If they are pregnant or plan to get pregnant, they should avoid using Minoxidil

Local pharmacy

The local pharmacy is also another option to purchase Rogaine products. You probably going to the pharmacy occasionally, you might as well pick up your hair loss treatment product from there. Since Rogaine is offered at the pharmacy, you can buy both a male and a female version of the product.

Rogaine products are slightly more expensive at the local pharmacy. Also, sometimes you may run out of Minoxidil and don’t have time to go to the pharmacy. Picking up Minoxidil at the local pharmacy requires staying in line and having an awkward conversation with the cashier about your hair loss.

Amazon is some people’s favorite place to shop. Most of us buy a couple of items every month from Amazon, so it is easy to add Rogaine to our monthly purchase.

Amazon offers both foam and solution versions as well. You can purchase Rogaine foam (pack of 3) from Amazon for $45.97, which comes to $15 per month or about 50 cents per day. Rogaine solution costs $44.73 (pack of 3) $44.73, which comes to $14.9 per month or about 50 cents per day.

With Amazon subscribe and save, you can even get a better deal.  With subscribe and save option, your first order-3 months of supply- would be $43.67 (foam) and $42.49 (solution), and you can get up to 15% off your future orders. You can cancel your subscription at any time for free. With subscribe and save option, you don’t have to worry about running out of Minoxidil as it shows up at your front door on regular bases.

Hims is an online telemedicine website that also offers 5% Minoxidil.  There are several advantages of buying Minoxidil from Hims than Rogaine.

Using Hims, you can take advantage of talking with a doctor. Minoxidil may not be the best or only medication you need to take. With Hims, you can fill out a health assessment, and based on your symptoms; the doctor will recommend a treatment that is best for you.

If you need to take Finasteride (which is a prescribed medicine), it is easy as well. Hims doctors can prescribe it for you. There are a few other items that you can purchase from Hims that will help with your hair loss.

Hims offers DHT blocking shampoo, conditioner, and Biotin vitamins. You can get the complete package with your monthly subscription.

And you do not even have to leave your couch to get medication from Hims. Everything is online, from talking with the doctor to ordering your prescriptions. Their price is also very competitive.

Hims started offering their products at Target as well. We compared the price of Minoxidil, shampoo, and conditioner from Target with their website.

Minoxidil is offered at $14.99, which is similar to Hims website. Hims shampoo and conditioner are selling at $12. 99 at Target. This is cheaper than Hims website. Hims offers the shampoo for $19 and conditioner for $22 or the combo of $33. You definitely save some money if you get the shampoo and conditioner from Target.

In general, you can get a better price for shampoo and conditioner at Target, but you can have your Minoxidil delivered to your house at the same rate as Target by using Hims.

Also, if you need to take Finasteride, you cannot get that from Target as it requires a prescription.

Hims and Rogaine Hair Loss Products

Both Rogaine and Hims offer Minoxidil, which is an excellent product for hair loss treatment. There have been numerous studies showing that Minoxidil had a positive effect on the prevention of hair loss on more than 60% of men. Most men also experienced increased hair density on their scalp.

What sets aside Hims from Rogaine is the number of products they offer for hair loss treatment. Hims offers Finasteride, shampoo, and conditioner as well.

Finasteride functions by decreasing the amount DHT. Scientists believe that in aging men, DHT interacts with their follicle and makes the follicle to shrink. Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to an increase in hair regrowth and slower hair loss.

JAAD published a study that was done on 1553 men (age 18 to 41). The main key finding of the study was that in men with male pattern hair loss, Finasteride slowed hair loss and increased hair growth. Hair growth in other parts of the body is not affected by Finasteride.

Do We Recommend Hims or Rogaine?

Rogaine Vs. Hims? which one to pick? Both Hims and Rogaine offer Minoxidil, one is branded, and the other one is generic. But which one is our preference? Whether you choose Hims or Rogaine, choose the online option and order it from the comfort of your home rather than going to the pharmacy and staying in line to get your medicine.

Between Rogaine and Hims, we recommend Hims. There are several reasons for that.

With Hims, you talk with a real doctor. You can follow up with them if you have any questions or concerns or if you noticed any side effects.

Hims doctors can evaluate your situation and provide you with the best treatment plan. You may need only Minoxidil, only Finasteride, or the combination of both. Hims doctors can prescribe Finasteride if that is something you need to take.

Hims offers several other services besides hair treatment. For example, they provide primary care, skin related products, supplements, help with mental health, and also products for sex issues such as erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation.

Hims is a one-stop-shop for men. If you are also interested in other telemedicine companies similar to Hims, you can read about Keeps or Roman as well. Keeps and Roman also provide hair loss products that you might be interested in. Here is also a comprehensive article comparing these three companies.
