Rogaine Vs. Keeps: Which One Works Better for Hair Loss Treatment?

What is the difference between Rogaine (a well-known brand in hair loss treatment) and Keeps (a new startup with the promise to help men with their hair loss problems)?

How are they different in pricing and service? How long does it take for each to be effective? Let’s discuss their similarities and differences of Rogaine vs. Keeps.

We Are Loosing Hair Sooner or Later

Don’t panic. We are all in the same boat. Sooner or later, our hair starts to fall. Don’t envy that guy with healthy and thick hair enjoying his look now. He is going to lose hair at some point in his life too. Based on several studies, about 66% of men lose hair before they turn 35.  That means out of every 100 million men, about 66 million have lost or are losing hair.

For most men with thinning or balding problem,  the most common cause is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the byproduct of testosterone- a very common hormone in our body. As of now, there is no cure for hair loss caused by our own hormone. This type of hair loss is called male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness also called androgenetic alopecia.

Even though there is no cure for male pattern baldness, but there are several treatments to prevent that from becoming worse or stoping it. The prevention is done by either addressing the main problem or by stimulating follicles.  Modern medicine offers a few different treatments for hair loss that works for most men. Both Keeps and Rogaine offer topical treatment that can prevent male pattern baldness.

There are two main ingredients that scientifically and clinically have been proven to be working on hair loss. The ingredients cannot be combined and need to be used separately. Depending on your condition, you may need to use one or both. In this article, we are going to focus on one of these two ingredients.

Is This the Right Product for You?

Hair treatment product that is being offered by Rogaine or Keeps is effective for men who are starting to lose hair. The way this product works is to help you prevent hair loss, not regrow the hair you already lost. As soon as you see the sign of hair loss or hair thinning, you should start taking this medicine.

The product that Rogaine and Keeps offer are designed mostly for men. Rogaine also has a product that is offered for women with hair loss issues. You can purchase it here on Amazon.

There are a couple of things you need to consider before purchasing this product from either Keeps or Rogaine.

This product needs to be applied daily (some times, doctors recommend using it twice daily), which means you should be willing to set aside some time each day for your treatment. A lot of people apply it at the same time they brush their teeth in the morning and evening as it is easier to remember. You are already brushing your teeth twice daily; you might as well set a couple of minutes aside to apply this medication.

This product is not a cure for baldness. It simply keeps the hair you already have from falling. So if you stop using the medication, your hair loss starts again. This means you need to be very consistent in applying the product. There have been numerous studies showing that daily use of this product can prevent men from losing hair and getting bold.

Should You Use Keeps or Rogaine?

What sets Keeps and Rogaine apart is the number of products they offer. Rogaine offers  Minoxidil- which is a topical solution- for both men and women. You can purchase Minoxidil from their website or Amazon.

Keeps, on the other hand, offers Minoxidil and Finasteride. Depending on what type of treatment you are seeking, you may only need Minoxidil (which you can also get from Rogaine), or you may need to use both Minoxidil and Finasteride (which you can get it from Keeps).

As far as Minoxidil itself, both companies offer an identical product, one is branded, and the other one is generic. Here is a little side note about the difference between the branded and generic form of a product:

Generic drugs have the same active ingredient as branded products. They have the same quality, same dosage, strength, and same route of administration (how you take them). Branded products are usually more expensive, and that is because their manufacturers have to go through extensive research, development, and clinical trials (typically take several years and are very costly) to get the FDA approval. Veras for generic products, their manufacturers, only need to prove that active ingredient is identical with the branded product to get the FDA approval. So generic products are less costly, and that is why they are cheaper.

What Is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is the active ingredient of Rogaine®. Rogaine has been on the market for more than 20 years, and tons of people have used it. Minoxidil will increase the size of follicles and extends the natural hair growth cycles. Minoxidil mostly helps with hair growth at the crown and vertex of the head.

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) published a study showing that daily usage of 5% minoxidil topical solution increased hair regrowth and decreased hair shedding.

Both Rogaine and Keeps offer 5% Minoxidil in two different forms, solution and foam. Minoxidil needs to be applied to your scalp, preferably twice daily. After using Minoxidil, you need to keep your hair dry for a couple of hours.

When you start using Minoxidil, initial shedding may happen as the new hair is trying to push out older strands. Hair growth will show as little as 3-4 months.

Originally, Minoxidil was intended to treat high blood pressure. During the trial period, some patients who were taking Minoxidil observed hair growth in some unwanted areas of their body, such as their cheek or back of their hands. With this finding, scientists decided to use Minoxidil as a topical solution for hair loss treatment.

Until today, we still don’t know the Minoxidil exact mechanism of action. All we know is that Minoxidil is a vasodilator- meaning that it increases the size of blood vessels- which helps with more oxygen and nutrients in our blood. More blood flow in vessel helps the follicles to increase in size and prevents hair from falling.

Rogaine Minoxidil

Both Keeps and Rogaine offer 5% Minoxidil, but what is the difference between them, if any. Let’s start with Rogaine:

Rogaine Minoxidil Foam
Rogaine Minoxidil solution

I am sure most of you who are looking for hair treatment products, have already heard about Rogaine. Rogaine is a well-known brand when it comes to hair loss products. Rogaine offers Minoxidil, which comes in either foam or solution. Since the concentration of Minoxidil is very low (only 5%), this medicine does not require a prescription, and you can purchase it over the counter.

With Minoxidil, it does not help people with complete boldness.  Minoxidil is most effective when you start applying it in the early stages of bolding or as soon as you realize you are losing hair. Basically, Minoxidil does not help with the regrowth of hair and just keeps the existing hair from falling out.  It is also more effective on vertex.

Rogaine Offers Minoxidil for both men and women

One of the reasons Rogaine is very popular is because they have products for both genders. Rogaine offers Minoxidil for both males and females who suffer from androgenetic alopecia. Rogaine offers 5% Minoxidil in foam and solution format for men. For women, they provide both forms, but the solution is less concentrated, and it only contains 2% Minoxidil.

Where to get Rogaine Minoxidil?

You can purchase Rogaine Minoxidil from either their website or Amazon. I personally like Amazon better as you get free shipping with prime, and also you can choose the subscribe and save option, and Amazon will ship it to you on a regular basis.

How often to use Rogaine Minoxidil?

For Minoxidil to be effective, you need to be very consistent. The most common application is twice daily.

How to use Rogaine Minoxidil?

You need to make sure your hair is completely dry before applying it. Turn the can (if using the foam) upside down and squit half a cap of the foam on your fingertips. Move your hair to one side so you can see the skin on your scalp. Apply the foam on your scalp and rub it where the balding is happening.

If you are using the solution form, it comes with a dropper; squeeze it to bring in 1 ml (there is a 1 mL line on dropper) of the Minoxidil solution. Then apply it directly to the scalp and rub it. After you are done, you can style your hair as usual.

Do not use more often than directed; continued use is necessary to increase the hair regrowth.

How long does it take to see the results?

With Rogaine Minoxidil, it usually takes a  few months (generally between 2 to 4) to see the results.

Keeps Minoxidil

Keeps Mixonidil

Keeps is another company that offers Minxodil as a solution to prevent hair loss. They are one of the few telemedicine startups that are solely helping men with hair loss issues. If you need to speak with their doctors, or if you are not sure that the Minoxidil is right for you, you can easily talk with their physicians by following this link.

Keeps offers other products besides Minoxidil that can help you with hair loss treatment. If you decide to get a consultation, the physician can provide you with the best treatment for your situation.

What makes Keeps a great option is that everything is done from the comfort of your home, from visiting the doctor, ordering your prescription, and receiving the medication.

Where to get Keeps Minoxidil?

You can purchase Keeps Minoxidil from their website. After you subscribe, Keeps will deliver the Minoxidil every 3 months.

How often to use Keeps Minoxidil?

Similar to Rogaine, for Minoxidil to be effective, you need to be very consistent. The most common application is twice daily.

How to use Keeps Minoxidil?

Rogaine or Keeps Side Effects

Since the active ingredient of the product that Rogaine and Keeps offer is the same, you would see similar side effects. Minoxidil may make your head itchy or cause dandruff, which you can prevent and stop it quickly by using an anti-itching and anti-dandruff shampoo like Baebody.

Other not very common side effects of Minoxidil include but not limited to chest pain, dizziness, skin rash, swelling of the hands and feet, headache, redness, and irritation at the site of application and unusual hair growth on the face, arm, and back.

If you notice any of these side effects, you can talk with your physician or don’t use Minoxidil for a while. Usually, the side effects will go away immediately after you stop taking it.

Best Way to Buy Minoxidil

Since Minoxidil is an over the counter medicine, you can purchase it without a doctor’s visit. To buy Minoxidil, you can go to your local pharmacy, order it through Amazon, use subscription companies like Keeps or purchase it directly from Rogaine. Let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each so you can pick the one that is right for you.

Local pharmacy

  • It is just right around the corner, and usually, there is one pharmacy within a few minutes of where you live
  • You can find the Rogaine brand in most pharmacies if this is what you are looking for
  • No need to go online and put in your credit card number
  • Most pharmacies carry both strength—5 % Minoxidil and 2% Minoxidil. If you are interested in lower concentration, you can find it there.
  • The only caveat is that the price at your local pharmacy is usually more expensive than Amazon or Keeps.com

Amazon

  • It is easy and convenient, especially if you are a prime member. You can purchase Rogaine foam (pack of 3) from Amazon for $45.97.
  • Want to save more money? Choose subscribe & save option and get 5% off for the first time and up to 15% off every 3 months after. So your first order would be $43.67, and you can get up to 15% off of your future orders.  With subscribe and save, you can cancel your subscription at any time for free.
  • With subscribe and save option, you don’t have to worry about running out of Minoxidil as it shows up at your front door on regular bases.
  • Amazon has both foam and solution, so you choose what you like better.

Keeps.com

Keeps is a great choice to get hair loss treatment products like Minoxidil.

  • You can consult online with a real doctor. Sometimes you don’t even need to talk to them. You just fill out the health assessment, and Keeps doctors can prescribe you what works best for you.
  • With Keeps, you also have the option to receive other medicine such as Finasteride- which requires a doctor’s prescription.
  • With some men, using Finasteride and Minoxidil as a bundle works best. Using Keeps, you can get the best pricing if you buy both of them together.
  • Their pricing is very competitive, and they send your medications to your house every 3 months.

Keeps and Rogaine Hair loss products

Both Rogaine and Keeps offer Minoxidil, which is an excellent product for hair loss treatment. There have been numerous studies showing that Minoxidil had a positive effect on the prevention of hair loss on more than 60% of men. Most men also experienced increased hair density on their scalp.

What sets aside Keeps from Rogaine is the number of products they offer for hair loss treatment. Keeps solely focused on hair loss and offers Finasteride and Ketoconazole shampoo as well.

Finasteride functions by decreasing the amount DHT. Scientists believe that in aging men, DHT interacts with their follicle and makes the follicle to shrink. Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to an increase in hair regrowth and slower hair loss.

Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD) published a study that was done on 1553 men (age 18 to 41). The main key finding of the study was that in men with male pattern hair loss, Finasteride slowed hair loss and increased hair growth. Hair growth in other parts of the body is not affected by Finasteride.

The primary use of Ketoconazole shampoo is to treat fungal or yeast infection. However, there has been some evidence showing that it may help promote hair growth or reduce hair loss.

There is an interesting study with pictures showing the effect of Ketoconazole shampoo on hair loss.

Do We Recommend Keeps or Rogaine?

Both Keeps and Rogaine offer Minoxidil, one is branded, and the other one is generic. But which one is our preference?

Whether you choose Keeps or Rogaine, use the online option and order it from the comfort of your home rather than going to the pharmacy and staying in line to get your medicine. This saves you from an awkward conversation about your hair loss with the cashier at your local pharmacy as well.

Between Rogaine and Keeps, we recommend Keeps. There are several reasons for that.

Your condition can be evaluated with the doctor. Sometimes, you may think since Minoxidil worked on your friend or brother, it may be a good option for you. Going through the health assessment, Keeps doctors can recommend what is best for you. You get a doctor’s visit without even leaving your house. How cool is that?

If you need to take other medications such as Finasteride, Keeps has a competitive offer for it. Their pricing gets even better if you bundle Finasteride and Minoxidil.

Keeps also has a subscription plan, and they ship your medications every 3 months. You have the option to talk with your doctor at any time if you experience any side effects or have questions or concerns.

Speaking of subscription plans, you can read about other companies that offer subscription-based hair loss treatment such as Roman or Hims. This is also a comparison between keeps vs. Hims vs. Roman.
